OceanExplorer Responsible & Educational Whale Watching
OceanExplorer sails from the marina at El Puerto de Tazacorte, on La Palma, to watch cetaceans with marine biologists on board. There is a family outing aboard the Flipper, a two deck boat with wide capacity, and two routes on the Bussard, capped at twelve passengers, one premium and one classic with a swimming stop. The company also keeps offices in Los Cancajos and Puerto Naos.
The boats hold the Barco Azul blue flag certification as vessels authorised for cetacean watching. One rule governs every trip: no swimming with the animals, no touching and no feeding. All departures are guided by marine biologists, who explain during the crossing which species turn up and how they behave.
Common sightings include bottlenose dolphins, tropical pilot whales and sea turtles, varying with the time of year. The company takes part in research projects and keeps a catalogue of pilot whales. Guests are attended in Spanish, German, English, French and Dutch, and the boats carry life jackets and toilets. Trips are booked in advance.
