Volcán de Tajogaite
A La Palma volcano born in the 2021 Cumbre Vieja eruption, near El Paso, now one of the island's leading hiking and geotourism destinations.
Tajogaite volcano, on the western slope of Cumbre Vieja (El Paso, La Palma), is the youngest volcano in La Palma and in the whole Canary archipelago. It was born in the longest eruption recorded in the island's history: 85 uninterrupted days, from 19 September to 13 December 2021.
The eruption ejected more than 200 million cubic metres of material through a 700-metre fissure with up to six craters active at once, with an eruptive column reaching 8,500 metres. Lava covered more than 1,200 hectares and created 48 hectares of new coastal platforms. The cone now stands 1,131 metres high and is one of La Palma's foremost geological landmarks.
