Punkfish Diving La Palma
Punkfish Diving is a dive centre based in Los Canarios, in the municipality of Fuencaliente de La Palma, at the volcanic southern tip of the island. It works in small groups and uses four-wheel-drive vehicles to reach the more remote stretches of coast. The programme runs from snorkelling and try dives through to advanced courses, professional training and technical diving, with experienced guides and service in several languages.
The house reef is Malpique, known for its thirty-nine submerged concrete crosses, although the site holds more: moray eels, a tower covered in black coral, an archway on the outer reef and a shallow stretch full of fish. A few kilometres on lie the cove of Las Cabras, formed by the 1971 eruption, and Los Molinos. Next to the salt flats and the lighthouse, Playa del Faro opens onto a rocky, lively bay.
On the west side the centre dives beside the marine reserve, at La Bombilla and Puerto Naos, and reaches the recent Tajogaite lava and the arches of Charco Verde by boat. The east coast adds Los Cancajos, La Bajita and La Salemera. Sites are chosen according to the state of the sea and the preferences of the group. The centre trains divemasters and instructors, teaches technical diving with various gas mixes and publishes material on decompression theory.
