Cueva de Las Palomas
A lava tube over 500 metres long, formed in the 1949 eruption of the San Juan volcano, in Las Manchas (Los Llanos de Aridane). It is a protected Natural Monument and can only be visited on a guided tour booked in advance, starting from the Caños de Fuego interpretation centre.
The Cueva de Las Palomas is a lava tube that formed in 1949, during the eruption of the San Juan volcano, in the Las Manchas and Todoque area of Los Llanos de Aridane. It is more than 500 metres long; it was originally longer, but the road cut it into two sections. It is protected as a Natural Monument and Special Area of Conservation under the name Tubo Volcánico de Todoque, and in 2016 it officially got back the name locals know it by, after the pigeons that lived in it.
The cave is not open for free access: you can only go in on a guided tour, in small groups and booked in advance. Tours start from the Caños de Fuego volcanic caves interpretation centre; across the road, walkways over the lava field lead to a glass viewpoint and to the entrance of the tube. The visit takes about two hours, half outdoors and half underground, with a helmet and head torch. Closed shoes are required, and the minimum age is 5 or 6 depending on the company.
