Punto de Información Ambiental de Los Tilos
A visitor and environmental information point inside the Los Tilos forest, next to the Barranco del Agua in the municipality of San Andrés y Sauces, in the north east of La Palma. It introduces the Canarian laurisilva, an ancient type of laurel forest that survives here in unusually good condition. The trail towards the Marcos y Cordero springs, known for its rock tunnels, starts from this area.
Los Tilos holds one of the best preserved stands of laurel forest in the Canary Islands. In 1983 Unesco declared the 511 hectares of the El Canal y Los Tilos estate a Biosphere Reserve, the first in the archipelago, and in 2002 the designation was extended to the whole island of La Palma. The information point beside the Barranco del Agua acts as the gateway to the forest and explains its plants, its animals and the part the woodland plays in the island water supply.
Several walks begin in this area, from short loops along the floor of the ravine to the long crossing to the Marcos y Cordero springs, which passes through about a dozen tunnels cut into the rock. That route calls for a head torch, waterproofs and firm footwear, and walkers usually take a four wheel drive taxi up to Casa del Monte and come back down on foot. The forest stays damp for most of the year.
