Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria
Seafront Marian sanctuary, patron saint of the Canaries.

The Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria is a Catholic church located on the Plaza de la Patrona, in Candelaria (Tenerife), dedicated to the Virgen de Candelaria, patron saint of the Canary Islands. It is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural and was raised to the rank of Minor Basilica by Pope Benedict XVI in 2011.
Inside it holds the image of the Virgin, the work of Fernando Estévez del Sacramento, and the murals by the painter José Aguiar in the high altar and the camarín, including one dedicated to the «Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes». It also features depictions of the Canarian blesseds Padre José de Anchieta and Santo Hermano Pedro. The church can hold 5,000 people.
The current building, in the neo-Canarian style and designed by the architect Enrique Marrero Regalado, was inaugurated on 1 February 1959. It replaced an earlier church of 1672 destroyed by fire in 1789; the original image of the Virgin was lost in the flood of 1826.
