Museo Castillo de Mata

Castillo de Mata houses the Museum of the City and the Sea in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The fortification was built in 1577 beside the city wall and is one of the few surviving remains of the town's sixteenth-century defensive system. It was declared a Historic Artistic Monument in 1949 and, after a restoration completed in 2013, opened as a museum in 2015.

The display is arranged around four spaces and the cubelo, and traces the history of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria from the fifteenth century to the present day. It rests on two threads: the history of the castle itself together with its archaeology, and the city's relationship with the sea.

The building stands near the Triana district, within the old town. The restoration that preceded the museum opening was led by the architect Ricardo Montesdeoca and preserved the remains of the fortification, so the structure itself forms part of the visit.
