Mercado Central de Las Palmas
The main municipal food market of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, on Calle Galicia beside the Mesa y López shopping district. It was built on former dunes to a design by the architect Manuel Ponce de León and opened in July 1957. Around one hundred and twenty eight stalls spread over two floors and a shopping gallery sell fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and other fresh produce from the island.
The Mercado Central is one of the big covered food markets of the Gran Canarian capital. Designed by the architect Manuel Ponce de León, it went up in barely ten months on a stretch of dunes and opened on 18 July 1957. The name refers to its position at the crossing of what are now Calle Galicia and Calle Néstor de la Torre, between the older city centre and the Mesa y López shopping area.
Until 1981 it worked as a wholesale market as well as a retail one and supplied shops across the municipality. Today it keeps around one hundred and twenty eight stalls on two floors: local fish and shellfish, butchers, fruit and vegetables, Canarian cheeses and a gallery of other small businesses. It is a straightforward place to see what islanders actually cook and eat.

Shops open 10:00 to 22:00 every day; the food court closes at midnight.
