The flea market of the Gran Canaria capital is held on Sundays on the Ramblas Alcalde Juan Rodríguez Doreste (Parque Blanco) and is, according to the island's market guides, the largest in the city. Island market guides describe it as the largest in the capital: hundreds of stalls lined up along the Ramblas, mixing second hand goods, clothing, footwear, accessories, costume jewellery, antiques and collectors' items.
It rewards slow looking rather than a quick errand, because the point is what turns up when you were not looking for it. Pastry and Canary produce stalls sit among the rest, and the atmosphere is that of a neighbourhood outing: families, bargain hunters and the merely curious working their way along the same pavement. The selling that sometimes spills over into Calle Simón Bolívar, next to the market, is done by people who are not part of the authorised rastro.
