Mirador de Cofete

sellViewpointsstorefrontIslas24sunny26°C

The Cofete viewpoint looks out over one of the most isolated scenes in Fuerteventura: Cofete beach, fourteen kilometres of fine white sand protected by the bulk of the Jandía mountains. It lies in the municipality of Pájara, inside a protected natural area covering almost the whole Jandía peninsula, formed by the island's oldest volcanic massif. Access is by unpaved track, a journey of roughly an hour and a half.

Cofete is the corner where Fuerteventura stops resembling itself. On the far side of the Jandía range, with its back to the tourist centres of the south, a fourteen-kilometre beach stretches out with the mountains falling straight onto the sand. The viewpoint is where you take that whole scene in at once, and on its own it justifies the climb.

Access is by a dirt track crossing the range that demands time and care at the wheel. Once up, besides the viewpoint, the area holds the settlement of Cofete with its old stone houses, which speak of life two centuries ago, and the Casa Winter. The whole area belongs to a protected natural space with a great diversity of animal and plant species, many of them endemic or rare, which explains the limits on use in the zone.
