Iglesia de El Salvador

The Church of El Salvador rises over the Plaza de España, the monumental square that anchors the old town of Santa Cruz de La Palma. Founded around 1500, shortly after the island was conquered, it is the mother parish of the Palmeran capital and one of the most significant religious buildings in the archipelago. Its carved stone portal and calm proportions capture the Renaissance taste that reached the Canaries along the Atlantic route linking mainland Spain, the islands and the Americas.

Inside lies its best-known treasure: a Mudejar wooden coffered ceiling that spans the nave and ranks among the finest preserved in the islands, an inheritance of Morisco carpenters and a craft that crossed the ocean.
