Recreational area amid Canary pine forest on the Cumbre Vieja, the classic starting point of the Volcano Route on La Palma.
Refugio del Pilar is a recreational area set right on the Cumbre Vieja, in the municipality of El Paso, surrounded by a dense forest of Canary pine. At high altitude, it is one of the most cherished gathering places on La Palma and the usual departure point of the famous Volcano Route, which follows the island's southern ridge.
The site offers picnic spots and shady areas beneath the pines, in a fresh mountain atmosphere. Trails set off from here climbing towards the volcanic cones and the summit viewpoints, with panoramas that on clear days reach both sides of the island.
