Roque de Garachico

The Roque de Garachico is a small volcanic islet rising just off the coast of Garachico, and it has become the emblem of the town. Declared a Natural Monument in 1987, its silhouette accompanies any walk through the historic quarter, with the sea breaking at its base and the village nestled beneath the volcano. It is best seen from the seafront, beside the castle of San Miguel and the natural pools of El Caletón. There is no need to climb the roque: you enjoy it from land, strolling along the coast. Those pools were born when the 1706 eruption sent its lava down to the sea and buried what had been one of the most important ports in the Canary Islands, giving the town the landscape it has today.
Did you know? Its walls are a nesting site and refuge for threatened seabirds such as Bulwer's petrel, the little shearwater and the Madeiran storm-petrel. That is why the islet is protected and not open for climbing.

It is reached by car from the village centre heading north, along the camino del Pinar.
