Mirador de las Narices del Teide

sellViewpointsstorefrontIslas24rainy32°C

The Narices del Teide viewpoint looks out over the eruptive vents of the last eruption recorded inside the National Park, that of the Chahorra volcano in 1798, which lasted ninety-nine days and was the last the islands saw until well into the following century. From here you see the black flow that ran down the flank of Pico Viejo, a crater eight hundred metres wide, and the contrast between that recent lava and the rest of Las Cañadas.

Las Narices del Teide are the vents through which the lava of the Chahorra volcano emerged in 1798. That eruption, which went on for ninety-nine days, was the last inside what is now Teide National Park, after those of Siete Fuentes and Fasnia in 1704. The viewpoint sits directly opposite the resulting lava field, so the scene reads without any need for explanation: a tongue of dark rock descending from the flank of Pico Viejo.

Pico Viejo, with a crater about eight hundred metres across, is the park's second summit and the source of this flow. The viewpoint lies on the road crossing Las Cañadas and makes a short stop, but it is also the reference point for the PNT 09 trail, which links Mount Teide with Pico Viejo and comes down to here. Altitude and exposure mean wind and cold are usual even in summer.
