Museo Arqueológico de Fuerteventura
The Museo Arqueológico de Fuerteventura stands in the Villa Histórica de Betancuria, the first capital of the Canary Islands after the conquest and listed among the most beautiful villages in Spain. It is a modern space created with a vocation for promoting culture and research, and it works as the centre and hub of knowledge about the majorero aborigines, the mahos. The Cabildo de Fuerteventura runs it.
The collection rests on the legacy the aborigines left at sites such as Montaña Tindaya, the Cueva de Villaverde, La Atalayita, La Fortaleza and La Pared. Working from that material, the display reconstructs the magical and religious world of the mahos, their material culture and the strategies with which they survived for more than two thousand years in an arid and difficult land.
The Cabildo de Fuerteventura presents it as the reference point for coming to know the majorero people better and for continuing to supply answers to the secrets that surround the lives of the island's aboriginal settlers. The museum belongs to the island museum network, which keeps a programme of activities, teaching resources for schools and virtual tours of its spaces.
