La Casa del Carnaval

La Casa del Carnaval opened in 2017 in the park of the barranco de Santos, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and is devoted to the city's Carnival, the only one in the Canary Islands declared of International Tourist Interest. The building covers 1,052 square metres arranged in four areas, among them a permanent room whose content is highly interactive. The symbolic pieces on display include the first poster ever used to announce the festival, the work of the painter Juan Galarza, and the ceremonial baton that Enrique González, director of the Afilarmónica Ni Fú-Ni Fá, used for conducting.
The centre stands at Calle Aguere 17, beside the barranco de Santos, and answers on 922 04 60 20; further details are at casacarnavalsantacruz.com. Because the material is concentrated in interactive rooms, the visit suits travellers with limited time who want to understand what Carnival means to the city outside the days of the festival itself.

Castillo de San Juan Bautista
A circular fortification of volcanic stone in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, built in the first half of the 17th century. It was the second most important stronghold in the city's defensive system and is popularly known as the Castillo Negro. It has been listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural since 1949 and passed into municipal hands in 1982. Its interior is not open to visitors; the exterior stands in full view, between the Auditorio de Tenerife and the Parque Marítimo.
