Casa Winter
Casa Winter is the white house with a round tower that the German engineer Gustav Winter built in Cofete, on the Jandía peninsula in Fuerteventura, inside the Jandía Natural Park. A legend of submarines and fleeing Nazis grew up around it, but archival research does not support it. Today it is a private house whose ownership is disputed in court, and no public authority publishes any visiting arrangements.
Casa Winter stands in Cofete, at the foot of the mountain above the long beach of the same name, on the Jandía peninsula. It was built for Gustav Winter, a German engineer who ran the CICER electricity company in Las Palmas and who leased and then, through a company, acquired the whole peninsula. The sources disagree on when building began: the family speaks of foundations in 1941, his son's book of 1946, and the firmest documentary date is a permit from 1949.
A legend grew up around the house of a submarine base, a tunnel down to the sea and Nazi officers fleeing to South America, but archival research does not support it. Today it is a private home whose ownership is disputed in court, and neither the Cabildo, the town council nor the tourist office publishes any visiting arrangements. Cofete lies inside the Jandía Natural Park and is reached by the track from Morro Jable that the Cabildo maintains.
