Playa de Jarubio
An isolated beach on the west coast of Fuerteventura, between Puertito de Los Molinos and the Tindaya massif, also known as Playa de Jarugo. It runs between 230 and 280 metres long and about 40 wide depending on the tide, with fine sand in ochre and brown tones and volcanic cliffs closing off the shore. There are no tourist services, no lifeguard and no infrastructure of any kind, and that is precisely the appeal.
As along most of the island's west coast, the sea here is usually rough and changeable. Islanders call this strip the northern sea, a reference to the heavy swell that batters this stretch open to the Atlantic, so swimming can be dangerous at certain times of year and caution is always in order. Those same conditions make the spot popular with surfers and with anyone who enjoys watching the sea at full strength.
At the left hand end of the sand there is a natural breakwater that turns into a spectacle on windy days with a big swell, the waves smashing against the rock. Cross it, especially at low tide, and you reach a smaller and even more sheltered cove. Vehicle access is best made from the village of Tindaya along dirt tracks in good condition, which cross the rural, volcanic landscape of the northern interior. Come prepared, with water, sun protection and everything you need, because there is nothing to be found at the beach.
