SURFERS ISLAND - Surf-and Kitesurfschool Fuerteventura
Surfers Island has run as a surf and kitesurf school in Morro Jable, on the Jandía peninsula, since 2008. Its station stands on Calle Melindraga, and from there it organises surf lessons on the beaches of La Pared, Esquinzo and Cruz Roja and kitesurf lessons in the Risco del Paso lagoon at Sotavento. It teaches every level, with a maximum of eight students per instructor and transfers from accommodation nearby.
The school holds licences for three beaches, La Pared, Esquinzo and Cruz Roja, and decides each day which one offers the best conditions for the prevailing swell. Surf sessions are scheduled around low tide, so the starting moment shifts from day to day. Courses range from a taster to advanced coaching, run in mixed-level groups with a private option, and come with a board and a wetsuit. Swimming ability is required, along with a minimum weight of thirty-five kilos for group lessons.
Kitesurfing is taught in the Risco del Paso lagoon, always at high tide, in shallow water split into zones for beginners and for advanced riders. One instructor takes two students on a single kite and guidance is given over radio headsets. The main wind season runs from May to September. The team teaches in six languages, among them German, English and Spanish.
