Biosean - Whale watching & marine science
A whale watching and marine science operator based in Las Galletas, a fishing village in the south of Tenerife. Every trip sails with marine biologists and researchers on board, aboard a stable and non intrusive boat that takes ten passengers and carries the Blue Boat mark awarded by the Tenerife tourism department. The route runs through the Teno-Rasca Special Area of Conservation.
Biosean treats whale watching as more than looking at animals, and sums its approach up as observing, listening, understanding, researching and conserving. Marine biologists and researchers travel with the passengers on every outing, so the behaviour and the sounds of whales and dolphins are explained as they happen. The boat Biosean Explorer carries ten passengers, a size chosen for comfort, for close contact with the guide and for a respectful, non intrusive approach to the animals.
The working area is the Teno-Rasca Special Area of Conservation, part of the Natura 2000 network and named by the World Cetacean Alliance as the first Whale Heritage Site in Europe. At least a quarter of all cetacean species on the planet have been seen in these waters. Data gathered on the tours is shared through agreements with universities and research centres, and interns on the placement programme use it for their final degree projects. Solid waste found at sea is collected on every trip.
