Mercado del Agricultor San Miguel de Abona

The association behind the market was set up on 23 January 2000 as a non-profit body covering the whole Chasna-Isora district, formed by farmers, stockbreeders, pastry makers and craftspeople. Its purpose was to revive farming in the medianías, the mid-altitude belt that had been losing hands to the service economy on the coast, and to give growers a sales channel of their own. Imported produce is banned and the rule is checked, so what reaches the counter comes from the work of the person selling it.

The site consists of a central hall of about 583 square metres laid out in aisles, with 66 stalls of four square metres each, every one wired for its own light. Inside the grounds there is a cafeteria, a children's playground and wide parking areas, right in the Las Chafiras estate. The range covers seasonal fruit and vegetables, local potatoes, cheeses, breads and pastries, wines, mojo sauces and preserves, along with crafts made in the district. Through the year the market also runs workshops for adults and children, cooking demonstrations and tastings.
