Playa de San Marcos
Playa de San Marcos opens onto a shell-shaped bay in Icod de los Vinos, sheltered by high cliffs that shield it from wind and swell. It is a black volcanic sand beach of about 160 metres, with calm waters much loved by those after a gentle swim, and beside it lie a small fishing harbour and a few services. Over the years the sand has given ground to pebbles, so its look changes with the seasons.
Did you know where its name comes from? It goes back to the image of Saint Mark the Evangelist which, according to tradition, appeared during the conquest in a cave by the shore and is now venerated in the church of Icod.
