Mirador de La Tosca

sellViewpointsstorefrontIslas24partly_cloudy_day20°C

Mirador de La Tosca sits at 700 metres above sea level on the LP-1 road towards Gallegos, within the municipality of Barlovento in the north of La Palma. From it you can see the typical hamlets of rural areas with steep terrain, the districts of Topaciegas, La Palmita and Gallegos, and the cliffs of the northern coast. Below the viewpoint an ageing stand of dragon trees grows beside stone houses.

The town council stresses that this setting preserves the oldest thousand-year-old dragon trees in the Canary Islands. For centuries local people drew fibres, dyes and rope-making material from those trees for maritime trade, a use that lasted into the twentieth century. The view opens over the districts of Topaciegas, La Palmita and Gallegos, over deep ravines and over the cliffs of the north of the island.

The viewpoint has become the first fully accessible mirador in the Canary Islands, according to the council itself: an adapted entrance for people with reduced mobility, two reserved parking spaces, information in braille and QR codes intended for people with hearing, visual, intellectual or developmental disabilities. A stretch of the GR 130, the Camino Real de la Costa, also starts here and runs as far as Gallegos.

Mirador de Izcagua

Mirador de Izcagua stands in the El Pinar area of Puntagorda, in the north-west of La Palma, right beside the Mercadillo del Agricultor farmers' market. The website of the La Palma Biosphere Reserve presents it as a set of floating viewpoints: walkways edged with glass railings that reach out over the ravine and give a sensation of flight. It is reached by car from the village centre heading north, along the camino del Pinar.
