Mirador de La Atalaya

sellViewpointsstorefrontIslas24partly_cloudy_day27°C

From the Mirador de La Atalaya, in the centre of Artenara, the hamlets of Las Cuevas, Caidero and Chajunco come into view. A careful look at these districts is enough to work out that this is a cave dwelling village, where most of the residents live in modern caves that are cool in summer and warm in winter. The village also sits in the middle of the pine woods of inland Gran Canaria.

Without moving from the spot, the bulk of the Tamadaba pine forest comes into view and, further back, the outline of Teide on Tenerife. There is also a wide panorama over the town centre of Artenara and over the Montaña de La Cilla, whose summit carries the Corazón de Jesús. Together they sum up the landscape of the interior of the island, between pine forest and midland slopes.

The viewpoint itself holds two sculptures, unveiled in 2007, alluding to the environmental values of the municipality: Forestas, which evokes the pine forest, and Protego, which stands for the landscape of the coast and the midlands. The point is on Avenida Matías Vega, in the town centre of Artenara, in the mountainous interior of Gran Canaria.
