Parque escultórico Puerto del Rosario

sellMuseumsstorefrontIslas24sunny31°C

The Parque escultórico Puerto del Rosario brings together more than a hundred sculptures in different styles and materials, spread across the streets, squares and roundabouts of the capital of Fuerteventura. The works come from the successive international sculpture symposia held since 2001, with artists from many countries, and they turn the urban fabric of the town into an open-air museum.

Islas24

The Parque escultórico Puerto del Rosario is not gathered into a single enclosure: its hundred and more pieces are spread across the streets, squares and roundabouts of the capital of Fuerteventura, so the route is covered on foot through the town. The ensemble grew out of the international sculpture symposia called since 2001 and takes in abstract, figurative, geometric and organic work.

Among the most cited pieces are the Fuente de la Explanada, showing the majorera woman in her double role of mother and worker; las Caracolas, alluding to the town's relationship with the sea; el Pescador de Viejas, dedicated to traditional fishing; la Ofrenda al Mar, evoking the island's aboriginal past; el Homenaje a la Luna, which recreates the skeleton of a whale; and the Monumento a Don Manuel Velázquez Cabrera, the town's first mayor.

The Casa Museo Miguel de Unamuno occupies the house that took in the writer when he reached Fuerteventura in 1924, banished by the Rivera dictatorship. It stands in the centre of the old Puerto Cabras, today Puerto del Rosario, and keeps the feel of a bourgeois home of the last century, with fine wood, heavy drapes and period devices such as a typewriter and a phonograph.
