The Barranco de las Peñitas, near Vega de Río Palmas in central Fuerteventura, is one of the island's greenest and most distinctive corners. The trail starts in the village, passes the hermitage of the Virgen de la Peña, Fuerteventura's patroness, and one of the island's few dams.
The steeper final stretch works up the ravine among rocks to the Arco de las Peñitas, a spectacular natural stone arch formed in some of the oldest geological materials in the Canaries. There is no clearly waymarked path in the upper section and some steps require using your hands, so sturdy footwear and caution are advised.
