Playa de Rojas
A corner of the El Sauzal shoreline in northern Tenerife, described by the town council itself as having crystal-clear water and natural rock pools of great beauty. It lies inside the Costa de Acentejo Protected Landscape, a coastal strip of 401 hectares running from La Orotava to Tacoronte, whose value comes from its steep, cliff-bound scenery, a landform typical of the archipelago's north coast.

The El Sauzal coast alternates headlands, pebble shores and small bays, and Rojas is one of its stops: crystal-clear water and natural rock pools of great beauty, in the town council's own words. The whole coastal front belongs to the Costa de Acentejo Protected Landscape, declared in 1987 as a natural site of national interest covering the cliffs of El Sauzal and Tacoronte, and reclassified into its present category by Canary Islands Natural Areas Act 12/1994. It covers 401 hectares of cliff with high scenic value.
The value of the area is not only scenic. This coast holds the only known population of Lotus maculatus, the El Sauzal pico, a plant found nowhere but Tenerife and covered by a Canary Islands Government recovery plan: barely thirty specimens survive under the pressure that comes from how easy their habitat is to reach. Reason enough to keep to the paths, pull up no plants, and take away no stones or anything else from the surroundings. The ground is steep and rocky, and it is worth checking the state of the sea before going in.
