At the end of one of the streets in San Juan de la Rambla's old town, Charco de La Laja appears almost by surprise: a clear pool that volcanic rock shelters from the swell, slowing the currents and offering a calm swim. It is a fine spot for swimming and snorkelling, with restaurants close by. You go down a stone staircase that can turn slippery after rain or high tide, so tread carefully and skip the water on rough sea days.
