Hacienda el Terrero
Hacienda El Terrero is an old Canarian hamlet looking out over the Atlantic from the El Terrero cliff, on the coast of Los Realejos in northern Tenerife. Restored as a small rural ecotourism complex, it has twelve houses of different sizes along cobbled lanes, set on a 200,000-square-metre organic farm where banana plants, coastal vines and fruit trees grow once again.

Hacienda El Terrero looks out over the Atlantic from the El Terrero cliff, on the coast of Los Realejos in northern Tenerife. Its land was part of the payment that the adelantado Alonso Fernández de Lugo made to the Flemish mercenary Jorge Grimón after the conquest of the island. Sugar cane was grown here from 1505, then coastal vines for malvasía wine, shipped from the Bay of El Terrero to Europe and the New World, and from the late 19th century bananas. By the mid 20th century the hamlet was deserted; in 2016 the Grupo Pedrana bought the estate and turned it into an organic farm.
The former farmworkers' homes are now twelve rural houses, each with its own entrance off the hamlet's cobbled lanes: one and two-bedroom houses, studios and lofts with details of traditional Canarian architecture. La Lajeta occupies part of the old winery from 1537, and La Parra is adapted for guests with reduced mobility. There is an infinity pond with a sun terrace, and the estate's paths lead down to the coast on foot. The houses can be booked online.

Most of the bad stories about buying here are not about price. They come from three things the listing does not show: what class of land it sits on, what the registry says, and whether that house can legally be let to tourists. All three can be checked before you sign anything.
