Mercado De Vegueta

The Vegueta market is the oldest in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and stands at the former mouth of the Guiniguada ravine, facing the Pérez Galdós theatre and two minutes on foot from Santa Ana cathedral and the Casa de Colón. The building, from the middle of the nineteenth century, was listed as a Site of Cultural Interest in 2005 and now houses more than forty stalls combining traditional shopping with contemporary food offerings.

Islas24

Vegueta is the best preserved historic quarter of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and its market has been part of that ensemble since the middle of the nineteenth century. The location is no accident: the building occupies the former mouth of the Guiniguada ravine, the point where the founding city opened to the sea, and it faces the Pérez Galdós theatre.

More than forty stalls share the interior. Alongside fruit, vegetables, fish, meat and cheese, more recent food ventures have appeared, so the market works both as a food hall and as a meeting place. Its architectural value is recognised by the 2005 listing as a Site of Cultural Interest, and the French travel site Easyvoyage placed it among the ten most beautiful markets in Europe, next to La Boquería in Barcelona and the flower market in Amsterdam.
