Casa del Plátano (Banana House)

In the heart of Icod de los Vinos, a restored manor house hides the sweetest little museum on the island, and the only one in Europe devoted entirely to the plátano de Canarias. The detail that says it all: your ticket is, literally, a banana that you eat during the visit.

The tour comes in two parts. First, an exhibition room with old machinery, historical photographs and panels in Spanish and English that tell how the banana reached the islands and why it reshaped their economy and landscape. Then you step out into the estate, a small plantation where you learn to tell the varieties apart and to recognise the Canarian banana by its aroma and that sweeter flavour that makes it unique. The walk ends with a tasting of banana products: liqueurs, wine, jams and sweets that you can also take home from the shop.
