Mirador de El Palmarejo

Viewpoint designed by César Manrique above Valle Gran Rey.

Islas24

The Mirador de El Palmarejo looks out over Valle Gran Rey, in the south-west of La Gomera, with a bird's eye view of the rock walls, the terraced hillsides, the palm groves and the houses at the bottom of the ravine. César Manrique designed it: the project began in 1989 and opened in 1995, and the architect camouflaged the building among the rocks so that it barely stands out in the landscape. The gardens gather plants native to the valley, such as the Canary palm, from which the palm honey that flavours the dishes of the restaurant built into the complex is obtained. You reach it by road from Valle Gran Rey and it has parking.

Mirador de la Curva del Queso

A roadside viewpoint on one of the wide bends of the GM-1, between the Yorima and Arure tunnels, on the descent into Valle Gran Rey. The semicircular platform is shaped like a round cheese, which is where the name comes from. From the railing the whole valley opens up: terraced fields, palm groves and the road zigzagging down to La Calera and the shore. It sits roughly 550 metres above the sea.
