The Museo Etnográfico Casas Cueva de Artenara occupies real cave dwellings cut into volcanic tuff in the centre of Artenara, the highest lying municipality on Gran Canaria. The display recreates the everyday life and the building techniques of the traditional cave houses, with the rooms arranged inside the rock cavities themselves.
The village is reached by the GC-21, the road across the summit area of the island. Translation sheets in several languages are available for the exhibition, and the visit is short, around twenty minutes, so it combines well with the cave settlement of Acusa Seca. Because of the altitude it is cooler here than on the coast, and layered clothing is a good idea.
