Museo de La Zafra
The Museo de La Zafra, a museum of tomato growing and rural life in Vecindario, gathers the most important aspects of the recent history of Santa Lucía de Tirajana: the cultivation and packing of tomatoes in the lower part of the municipality. The museum covers more than 4,000 square metres arranged in twelve rooms that take the visitor through production, packing, transport and export.
The rooms follow the thread of the tomato from its history and its cultivation through to the greenhouse, the vegetable plot and the export crops, and they also cover the way of life of the sharecroppers who worked the land. The reproductions include huts and workers' quarters and a packing warehouse, with the making of boxes and seretos, the sorting of tomatoes by size and their labelling, along with period vehicles, a loading dock and a small school.
Water takes up the other half of the route, with rooms on its uses and properties, on hydraulic infrastructure and on wells and galleries. The museum keeps an original well 85 metres deep, with all of its machinery and the appropriate safety measures, and a plot where crops grown from pre-Hispanic times to the present day can be seen. The information panels are in Spanish and English.
