The circular path around the Caldera de Bandama follows the rim of this volcanic crater across the municipalities of Santa Brígida, Telde and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. According to the official Canary Islands tourism portal it covers 4.2 kilometres, takes around two and a half hours, is graded low in difficulty and has an average gradient of 18 per cent, walkable all year round.
The caldera is 216 metres deep, about 1,100 metres across and more than three kilometres around. It was formed some 5,000 years ago by a phreatomagmatic explosion, when lava met groundwater, and its walls show successive stages of the volcanism of the island. Bandama is a declared Monumento Natural, a protected natural monument, and vines have been grown in its surroundings since colonial times.
The path sets off from Santa Brígida, beside a group of traditional houses that marks the entrance to the caldera, and passes the Mirador del Cornical viewpoint, Las Piedras and the era del acebuche threshing floor. Along the way stand the Casas de Fondo, a half ruined farmstead with a historic wine press, and the Cueva de los Canarios, an archaeological site once used as a granary. The south east slope keeps thermophile woodland with wild olive, mastic, palms and dragon trees.
