Ruta de La Plata
The Ruta de La Plata is a network of footpaths, drovers' tracks and royal roads that crosses the interior of Gran Canaria and links the south of the island with the north. The routes were laid out by the island's early inhabitants and were widened and improved at the end of the nineteenth century. The itinerary passes through places of high scenic and cultural value, among them Cruz de Tejeda, Cruz Grande and the town of Tunte.

The itinerary is divided into four stages: Cruz de Tejeda to Llanos de la Pez, Llanos de la Pez to the Ventana del Nublo, the Ventana del Nublo to Cruz Grande, and Cruz Grande to Tunte. The path runs across the high central ridge of Gran Canaria, between the municipal areas of Tejeda and San Bartolomé de Tirajana.
For a long time these tracks and royal roads were the only way of joining the southern territories to the north, at a time when road communications were practically non-existent. Local people and herders used them with their livestock as a short cut between the two sides of the island. Much of the route survives today as it was left after the widening works of the late nineteenth century, and it stands out both for the beauty of the walk and for the natural and historical value it gathers along the way.
