Islas24

Volcanic formation of exceptional scenic and volcanological value, part of the Malpaís de la Corona in northern Lanzarote (LZ-204 road, municipality of Haría). It belongs to a tunnel system some 8 kilometres long, formed about 23,000 years ago during the eruption of the Corona volcano, of which around 1 kilometre is open to visitors. Its interior reaches up to 50 metres high and 15 metres wide, keeps a constant temperature of around 18°C and preserves lava channels, solidified drips and salt deposits, along with an auditorium of remarkable acoustics. It served as a refuge from Barbary pirates in the 16th and 17th centuries and was adapted for visits in the 1960s under the direction of Jesús Soto.
