Lanzarote

No island looks like Lanzarote, and much of the credit goes to one man: César Manrique convinced the island to grow without spoiling its landscape, which is why the houses here are low and white and there are no high-rise blocks. The rest was the work of fire: the Fire Mountains of Timanfaya, the lava tunnels of the Cueva de los Verdes, and La Geria, where vines grow in pits of black ash and yield an improbable wine.
