Playa Blanca (Puerto del Carmen)
Playa Blanca is one of the two main stretches of sand at Puerto del Carmen, in the municipality of Tías, and it should not be mixed up with the town of the same name some twenty kilometres further south, in Yaiza. Fine golden sand, a south facing shore and usually gentle water, because the island itself screens the coast from the north easterly trade wind. Behind it runs Avenida de las Playas, the promenade that links the resort's beaches.

Playa Blanca takes up the seafront of Puerto del Carmen, in Tías, along Avenida de las Playas. It is worth settling the name before you get in the car: the town called Playa Blanca sits in Yaiza, at the southern tip of Lanzarote, some twenty kilometres away by road. This is the beach of the Tías resort, fine golden sand with the shore facing south, and the island itself screens it from the north easterly trade wind, which is why the water usually comes in gently.
Access is easy. Avenida de las Playas runs parallel to the sand, is pedestrian along much of its course and gathers the restaurants, shops and bus stops, with steps down to the shore every few metres. To the east the sand carries on towards Los Pocillos and Matagorda; to the west lie Playa Grande and the old harbour of La Tiñosa, where the town began as a fishing village. Puerto del Carmen is also one of the main diving bases on Lanzarote, and the airport is a few kilometres to the north east.
