Charco Azul: a natural pool in El Golfo (Frontera, El Hierro)

In the valley of El Golfo, at the foot of the great cliffs that dominate the north of El Hierro, the Charco Azul is one of the island's most photographed bathing spots. It belongs to the municipality of Frontera, in the area of Los Llanillos, and owes its fame to a setting as singular as it is photogenic: a basin of seawater set into the volcanic rock and crowned by a basalt arch that opens to the sea and the light just above the surface of the water. It is a regular stop for anyone touring the natural pools and beaches of El Hierro in search of a swim in a spectacular geological setting.

Volcanic origin and the character of the place

The pool was formed by ancient lava flows later shaped by the sea over thousands of years. The result is a set of dark-rock basins, with no sand, where the water takes on turquoise tones when the light enters beneath the basalt arch. There is one larger basin and another smaller, more sheltered one, which means the spot works both for swimming and for a quieter dip. The setting keeps an almost cave-like air: the cliff is only appreciated in its full dimension from inside the pool, which reinforces its visual appeal.

Access and services

The place is fitted out for visiting without losing its natural character. It has a parking area and a wooden sun deck, as well as walkways and steps that ease the descent to the water. It is not a beach with services: it is a natural bathing enclave, so it is best to bring what you need and respect the surroundings. The tide shapes the experience: at low tide you can better appreciate the interior and the play of light beneath the arch, while mid or high tide usually offers better bathing conditions.

Safety: bathe with caution

The Charco Azul has no lifeguard service and is classed as a moderate-swell zone. Although a natural wall protects the pool and the water stays calm on many days, in heavy seas the waves can break over the rocks and enter the pool. That is why it is essential to assess the state of the sea before bathing, take extra care with children and inexperienced people, and avoid bathing when the swell is strong. You should not assume the water is always calm.
