El Hierro

The smallest and most westerly of the main islands was for centuries the edge of the known world: the zero meridian once ran through here. Today El Hierro is a pioneer in another way, with its project to become a 100% renewable island thanks to Gorona del Viento. A Geopark and Biosphere Reserve, it keeps landscapes you won't see anywhere else: the juniper trees bent by the wind at El Sabinar, the El Golfo valley open to the sea, and underwater, the Mar de las Calmas at La Restinga, one of the best diving spots in Europe.
