Book presentation: «El español de Canarias. Aportaciones extranjeras y desarrollos internos» by Marcial Moreraverified
Marcial Morera presents his book El español de Canarias. Aportaciones extranjeras y desarrollos internos at the Centro Bibliotecario Insular in Puerto del Rosario, joined by Carmen Díaz Alayón. Rather than a complete history of Canarian speech, the book offers analyses and a critical review of earlier interpretations of loanwords, semantic changes and grammatical evolution. Free admission.
The Spanish of the Canary Islands has been widely described in its present-day features, but, according to the book's presentation, its historical formation remains a major gap in Canarian linguistics. The author, Marcial Morera, explains that this lack of knowledge is not due to an absence of specialists but to the scarcity of private documents able to show how the language was really used in past centuries.
In El español de Canarias. Aportaciones extranjeras y desarrollos internos he does not offer a complete history of Canarian speech, but analyses and a critical review of earlier interpretations of loanwords, semantic changes and processes of grammatical evolution. Carmen Díaz Alayón also takes part. Admission is free, and the presentation takes place in the Sala Josefina Plá of the Centro Bibliotecario Insular in Puerto del Rosario on Thursday 5 November 2026 at 19:00.
