The Teide Observatory, run by the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias, stands at around 2,400 metres in the Izaña area, above the sea of clouds. It is one of the planet's leading solar observatories and makes the most of Tenerife's exceptional sky quality.
It offers guided visits, by day to see its solar telescopes and by night for stargazing, which should be booked in advance. It is an essential stop for astro-tourism on the island.
