Parque Natural de Los Volcanes
Protected volcanic area of 10,158.4 hectares across Tinajo, Tías and Yaiza that completely surrounds Timanfaya National Park, with cones, lapilli fields and waymarked paths open to walkers.

The Parque Natural de Los Volcanes protects 10,158.4 hectares spread across the municipalities of Tinajo, Tías and Yaiza in the interior of Lanzarote, and it wraps entirely around Timanfaya National Park. Together the two areas form the clearest record of the island's recent volcanic eruptions: numerous cones and wide fields of lapilli, the material known on Lanzarote as rofe. To the south it borders the Janubio site of scientific interest, to the east the protected landscape of La Geria. Its cliffs and caves shelter seabirds and land birds such as Cory's shearwater and the peregrine falcon, and the area is designated a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA).
Unlike the national park, this one can be walked freely along its waymarked paths, which is the main reason to come: it is the way to cross Lanzarote's recent volcanic landscape on foot. The ground is loose lapilli and volcanic rock, so closed shoes, water and sun protection are sensible. As the area is a Special Protection Area for Birds, it is worth staying on the marked paths and keeping away from the caves and cliffs where Cory's shearwater and the peregrine falcon breed.
