Monumento natural de La Corona

Monumento natural de La Corona is a protected natural area of almost 1,800 hectares in the municipality of Haría, at the northern end of Lanzarote. It covers the La Corona volcano and the malpaís left by its eruption more than 21,000 years ago. The volcanic cone reaches 600 metres in height and the formation extends for almost ten kilometres.

During the eruption the outer lava solidified while the interior stayed hollow, so the flow kept advancing to the ocean and left behind a highly unusual volcanic tube. Collapses of its roof opened cavities known locally as jameos, among them the Cueva de los Escaladores, the Cueva de los Verdes and the Jameos del Agua. Two habitats meet within the area, the sparse tabaibal scrub and a subterranean ecosystem, both with high endemic biodiversity.
