Playa de Las Canteras, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Few urban beaches in Europe carry the weight of Las Canteras. It runs for about three kilometres along the seafront of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, from the bay of La Puntilla to the surroundings of the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium, and works as a genuine extension of the city: a strip of fine golden sand bordered by a continuous promenade full of cafés, bars and restaurants. It is not a secluded spot you go to in order to escape, but the place where the city itself goes to swim, stroll and watch the sunset all year round.

La Barra: the reef that defines the beach

The feature that gives Las Canteras its character is La Barra, a natural rocky formation that runs parallel to the coast in front of much of the beach, some distance from the shore. This reef acts as a natural breakwater and softens the swell along the central and northern half of the beach. At low tide, the sheet of water trapped between the sand and the rocks becomes a kind of calm pool, shallow and gentle, ideal for swimming with the family and for bathing without surprises. Beyond its recreational value, La Barra is home to remarkable marine biodiversity and is one of the most distinctive natural features of the whole shoreline.

A beach of many zones

Walking it from end to end means passing through very different atmospheres. La Puntilla, at the northern end, keeps the air of the old fishing quarter and is one of the most sheltered, family-friendly areas. Playa Chica and the area around the Muro Marrero tend to be the calmest stretches for going with children. Playa Grande is the most central and busy section, with the promenade in full swing. And at the southern end lies La Cícer, opposite the auditorium, an area of darker sand and stones that is the home of surfing and bodyboarding on the island.

A note on swimming at La Cícer

The protection of La Barra does not reach the La Cícer stretch. There the sea breaks open, with waves and currents that make it a good place to surf but demanding for recreational bathing. If you want a calm dip, stay in the central and northern zone sheltered by the reef; leave La Cícer for surfing or for bathing with caution and attention to the state of the sea and the instructions of the lifeguard service.

Services and accessibility

As the capital's flagship urban beach, it is equipped with services all year round: lifeguard surveillance and police presence, showers, adapted toilets, bathing facilities and parking nearby. Las Canteras stands out in particular for its commitment to universal accessibility, with specific certification (UNE 170001 standard), accessible routes, shaded areas and an assisted-bathing service that the World Tourism Organization has cited as an example of good practice. It should be noted that the beach does not currently hold the Blue Flag (it lost it in 2023 and is not among the 2026 awardees), although it retains other quality distinctions such as the "Q" for Tourism Quality and the ISO 14001 environmental certification.

Practical facts

  • Type of sand: golden and fine across most of the beach (darker and with stones at La Cícer).

  • Swimming: calm water in the central and northern zone thanks to La Barra; swell and currents at La Cícer.

  • Services: lifeguards, showers, adapted toilets, bathing facilities, bars and restaurants along the promenade, and parking nearby.

  • Accessibility: accessible routes, shade and assisted bathing (UNE 170001 certification).

  • Best for: family bathing, an urban stroll and sunsets; surfing and bodyboarding on the La Cícer stretch.

Las Canteras is, without question, one of the great urban beaches of the Canary Islands. For service hours, accessibility and the state of the beach you can check the municipal website Ciudad de Mar of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council or the official portal of Gran Canaria Tourism.
