Playa de La Tejita

Playa de La Tejita is one of the most extensive virgin beaches in southern Tenerife, located next to El Médano and at the foot of the volcanic cone of Montaña Roja, in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona. With nearly 1,000 metres of dark sand of volcanic origin and a protected natural setting with no promenade or buildings, it keeps an open, wild character rarely found in this part of the island. Its breadth, the clear horizon and the reddish silhouette of the mountain make it one of the most recognisable beaches of the Granadilla coast.

What the beach is like

The beach is around a kilometre long and about 33 metres wide, with fine dark sand typical of the Canary volcanic substrate. It is an isolated-type beach, set in a natural area next to the Montaña Roja Special Nature Reserve, which explains the absence of development directly on the shore. The far stretch, at the end closest to the mountain, is traditionally associated with naturist use.

Services

  • Parking: a designated area with more than 100 spaces near the access.

  • Lifeguards: Granadilla de Abona Town Council includes La Tejita among its supervised beaches, with a service from 10:30 to 19:30 (extended in the summer season).

  • Cleaning and bins: municipal cleaning service and waste containers.

  • Sunbeds: sunbed and parasol rental in season.

  • Access: on foot and easy from the car park; connection by interurban transport.

Bathing, wind and safety

La Tejita is an exposed, windy beach, a condition that has made it popular among windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts in the El Médano area. The swell can be moderate and, with heavy seas or poor conditions, undertow and currents form that make bathing difficult. You should respect the instructions of the lifeguard service, avoid bathing when a red flag is flying, and keep a special eye on children and inexperienced swimmers. On calm-sea days bathing is pleasant, but caution is always advisable on this open coast.

Surroundings

The great scenic attraction is Montaña Roja, a volcanic cone declared a nature reserve that closes the beach to the east and allows hiking routes with panoramic views over the southern coast. The nearby town of El Médano offers dining, accommodation and a seafaring atmosphere, complementing a beach day in one of the most valued natural spots of southern Tenerife.
