Exhibition «Candelaria, 1826. Recuerdo y aliciente piadoso» at the Dominican Conventverified
Candelaria remembers the great flood of November 1826 with the exhibition «Candelaria, 1826. Recuerdo y aliciente piadoso», open from 4 November to 3 February 2027 in the hall of the Dominican Convent next to the Basilica. It opens Monday to Friday from 16:00 to 19:30, and at weekends and on public holidays from 10:00 to 19:30. The official opening is on Monday 9 November at 11:00.
Two hundred years ago, in November 1826, a storm and the flood that rushed down the ravine devastated much of Candelaria: the convent was left in ruins and the original image of the Virgin was lost. As part of the Bicentenary of the 1826 Flood, the exhibition «Candelaria, 1826. Recuerdo y aliciente piadoso» brings that memory together in the hall of the Dominican Convent, next to the Basilica. It is curated by art historian Pablo Hernández Abreu, with the support of the Canary Islands Government's Directorate General for Heritage.
The exhibition is open from Wednesday 4 November 2026 to 3 February 2027, Monday to Friday from 16:00 to 19:30, and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 10:00 to 19:30. The official opening is on Monday 9 November at 11:00, in the convent courtyard. The town agenda does not list an admission price.
