A new opera about the Canarian writer Mercedes Pinto, built on her autobiographical novel Él and on her poetic, testimonial work. The Canarian composer Laura Vega wrote the music and signed the libretto as well. The story follows a woman from idealised love through suffering and submission, out of darkness and towards light. Él. De las tinieblas a la luz is a coproduction of the Fundación CajaCanarias, the LittleOpera Festival in Zamora and the Teatro Solís in Montevideo. It grows out of the figure of the Canarian writer Mercedes Pinto: her autobiographical novel Él and the poetic, testimonial work around it. The Canarian composer Laura Vega wrote the score and signed the libretto as well.
The plot follows one woman on her road from idealised love into suffering and submission, and from darkness towards light. The opera does not stop at violence inside the home: it also names the social structures that kept women quiet for decades. The performance is on 21 November at 20:00 at Teatro Leal in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, with tickets at 10 €.
