A 50 minute guided visit to Banana Eco-plantation, an organic banana farm on the El Rincón road in La Orotava with views of Teide. It explains how the Canary banana is grown and sold, what sets it apart from other bananas and how the farm's ecosystem works. It ends with a tasting of bananas and a shot made from the same fruit.
Banana Eco-plantation is an organically farmed banana plantation in El Rincón, in the municipality of La Orotava in the north of Tenerife, with views of Teide. The visit starts with the history of the farm and continues with a walk among the banana plants, following the whole process from the growing plant to the fruit going on sale.
The guide also explains what makes the Canary banana different: it holds Protected Geographical Indication status and takes about three months longer to ripen than the American banana. On an organic farm the ecosystem matters too, with insects that help control pests, cereals that keep the soil young and birds that provide fertiliser. The visit ends with a tasting of Canary bananas and a shot made from the same fruit.
The visit lasts 50 minutes; arrive 10 minutes early at the farm, Carretera El Rincón 71. The guide speaks Spanish and English. Only some areas are accessible, there are accessible toilets and visitors with reduced mobility need a companion. Pets are not allowed.
